já mám totiž asi problém s tím determine + minulý čas, protože to přece znamená něco jinýho než determine + budoucí čas

determine which mechanism will be reinforced = zapříčinit
determine which mechanism was reinforced = zpětně poznat

aha, tak já to asi chápu teda jinak, ale takto bez kontextu si to překládám jako " xy hrálo klíčovou roli v určení/určování, které ze dvou mechanismů byly posíleny přirozeným výběrem"

tzn. určit = zpětně poznat. ale Lenore, tvoje úroveň aj je vzhledem k tvé práci někde jinde než moje, takže ti asi nijak nepomůžu, jen mě to taky zajímá Smile

aha! já jsem to brala zpětně, že pomocí xy se určilo, jak to kdysi bylo. asi jakože použiješ nějakou látku na určení, jestli ten obraz byl v minulosti namalován tím nebo tím.
no ale to bych takhle z toho vůbec nepochopila, asi by mě to napadlo, jen kdyby to bylo "xy had played a key role", to bych mě pak napadla ta souslednost dějů. ale to zas nevím, jestli je dobře, protože ta souslednost se často vypouští. no asi už tě v tom ponechám, na mě je to moc složitý Mr. Green
